Hibernation: Yes, from the end of November to early March at 5- 10 °C.


Diet: Water (at all times). Carbohydrates like honey water/ sugar water or other. Protein like fresh-killed insects or other.


Colony form: Monogyne (one queen per colony) Average 7,000 workers per colony.


Founding Queen: Claustral (without feeding)


Nest type: Acrylic, Natural setup.
 

Sizes: Queen- 16- 17mm/ Worker- 7- 10mm/ Major 14- 15mm


Bite/ Sting/ Formic acid: Due to their big size, the majors are likely to bite if provoked.

 

Description: Camponotus ligniperda belong to the group of the largest species in Europe. In the early days of the colony, they can be very inactive but once established, they will be very active and a joy to watch. They're an aggressive species with powerful mandibles but mainly attack upon nest disturbance. Very polymorphic meaning the workers vary in size. The queens have beautiful red under-thorax's and gasters.
