Description: Messor arenarius are known as the Giant Harvester Ant due to their giant-like size and the way they collect seeds and store them in the nest. They do this to chew up the seeds and make 'ant bread' which is 70% of their diet. They're really sensitive to light and vibrations but once the colony gets going, they can reach impressive numbers. A heat and moisture gradient is important for Messor arenarius as they store their seeds in the drier parts.
